Robin Hewson

News has just reached us of the passing of Robin Hewson in the early hours of today.

He will be remembered by many bowlers not only from Oxfordshire but also from the many counties that he played against.

1983 saw Robin probably have his most memorable competition year, winning both the County Singles and Fours before representing Oxfordshire in the National Championship finals where along with his fellow Summertown bowlers Peter Sargeant, David Lewis and Clive Weston he skipped the rink all the way through to the Fours final where they eventual lost out 18-25 to a foursome from the Bolton BC from Lancashire. Robin must have made some impression as he was invited for a Senior England trial the following year.

It was another 10 years before he was a member of the Fours County Championship rink, this time with the formidable line up of Steve Beackon, Robert Mackie and Gary Harrington.

His last four ‘Rinks’ titles came in consecutive years, ’98, ’99, 2000 & ’01.

Not being satisfied with one singles title, ’85, ’93 & ’96 saw him collect it three more times.

His five Triples trophies covered a span of 33 years. The win in 1975 was the first of his many his County Championships and 2008 saw him win his last title. In between ’94, ’95 and 2003.

Robin is one of the few to have won all four Oxfordshire titles, the remaining one being the Pairs. Having won the Singles four times, the Triples five and the Fours six, to have only won the Pairs once asks the simple question, “ Did he struggle finding a good ‘lead’ or did he play with the wrong ‘skips’?

Our thoughts and condolences at this sad time are with his wife Judy and son Ashley.
