Watlington A win Summertown Trophy

Summertown Trophy 2019

On Saturday, 10 teams from around the County returned to a sunny Banbury Chestnuts for the Summertown Trophy Finals day, sponsored by Oxford Auto Dents. All qualifying teams played each other over 7 ends in a round-robin format to compete for over £1,000 in prize money.

Defending champions Headington A got off to a great start, beating their B team on the last end, before an emphatic win over Witney Town saw them take an early lead. By lunchtime they were level with last year’s runners-up Watlington A on +28 shots, who had also started the first 4 games with good wins.

After 7 games Watlington A had edged ahead of Headington A by 3 shots, with Carterton and West Witney B starting to close the gap in 3rd and 4th place.

With just 2 games to go, the competition reached a critical point, as Watlington and Headington came up against each other. Although the game started evenly, Watlington picked up some big scores in the latter stages to win their encounter 13-3 and give themselves an unassailable lead on +39 shots.

Going into the final game Carterton were hoping to hold onto second slot, but ended up losing by just 2 shots against a determined Headington B.  With West Witney’s B side manging a comfortable win over a fading Headington A, Kev Alder’s Witney team clinched second place and the Astall Ley trophy.

Watlington A picked up a draw in their final game, against Burford, to be crowned the new champions for the first time. After finishing runners-up of the Summertown Trophy for the previous 2 years, it was fitting that this year’s winners were the youthful Watlington side of Rob Parkes, Will Soden, Sam Watts, and Chris Gilkes.

Final Result

1st Watlington A +39
2nd West Witney B +27
3rd Carterton +22
