League title winners Headington A, were crowned ‘double’ champions for the second year running, after celebrating victory in the Oxfordshire Bowls League Cup final.
Having defeated their B side in the semi-final, Headington A came up against 3 times winners Banbury Central A on the floodlit green at Kidlington.
At the half way stage there was nothing to choose between the sides, as Central led on 3 of the 4 rinks but were still equal on shots over all. Headington’s rink of John Nichols, Steve Hainge, Paul Mabbutt, and Jason King were proving the difference between the 2 sides and were able to dominate short jacks to help stretch their lead. As the darkness descended Headington managed to step up a gear across all four rinks, finishing the last 5 ends strongly to romp to a 29 shot victory. Will Campion’s four went down fighting, with a narrow win for Central, and Nigel Galletly’s rink held on for a well fought draw.
A delighted team captain, Mark Charlett commented, “To collect the League and Cup double for the fifth time is a great finish to the season and I’m delighted with the success we’ve had at the club again this year. I’d also like to congratulate Banbury Central A on a good battle and Kidlington Bowls Club for being such excellent hosts again”.
