U25’s lose to Surrey in JHCL

Oxfordshire Under 25s must win all their remaining games if they are to stand any chance of lifting the JHCL title after losing by eight shots and seven points to three against Surrey at Kidlington on Sunday.

After failing to take any points Berkshire, the Oxon team really needed a convincing win against their visitors this week to get back in contention for a title that has so far eluded them however it wasn’t to be with Surrey leading from start to finish.

Dan Wakeman’s rink dropped behind and struggled throughout against an in-form Charlie Souter but, credit to him and his players, they dug in to finish twelve down and give their team mates a sporting chance of victory.

Shane Cooper’s four were always neck and neck with their opponents and went into the last end just two behind. With his last bowl the Oxon skip ditched the jack for two and a drawn rink.

George Schwab with Dan Swanson, Ryan Full and Lee Wilkinson took the President’s pens for best rink with their four shot win. It looked like it would have been a bigger margin to the third Oxon rink having led from the start however, needing to chase shots for the team towards the end, they just missed out allowing Surrey to take the final three ends.

The Oxon team next play Sussex at Popes mead BC, Crawley on Sunday, July 6th although sixteen compete in the fourth Oxon Under 25s Pairs competition at South Oxford on 29th June.

On a positive note when bigger counties are seemingly struggling for numbers, Oxfordshire youngsters were out in force with a further twelve players all taking part in an impromptu triples ‘round robin’.
