Oxon finish HCL campaign with a win over Bucks

Oxfordshire rounded off the Home Counties League campaign with a win by five shots and 16 points to 6 over Bucks at Bletchley Town on Saturday 31st August.

Languishing in fifth spot in the league Oxon needed the victory to go above their hosts to finish fourth. The game across the green was always a close affair with never more than about fifteen shots separating the sides and it was the four made up exclusively of Under 25s players that eventually carried the day.

Skipped by Gary May the rink of Sam Watts, Shane Cooper and George Schwab played excellent bowls as a four throughout to win fifteen out of the twenty-one ends, notch up 40 shots and cruise to an outstanding twenty-nine shot win over Bucks fours champion, Keith Patrick. This was the first time that a junior rink had played in the senior HCL and each of them proved without doubt that they are up to the task.

Jason King’s four was always involved in a tight game on rink one and eventually lost out to Brett Long by two while on the far side of the green, despite playing some good bowls the rinks of Ian Whelpton and Mike Petersen also slipped to defeats.

Alan Ley with his City & County four looked as if they were going to push the youngsters for top rink at one point however the last four ends won by Bucks meant a more modest five shot success but still a valuable two points in the bag. Last out was Gordon Walker against Ray Gaskins.

With Adie Twinn from Thame making his debut for the county at two, the Carterton skip’s team was always close with never more than five in it and went into the last end level, and four up overall. Gaskins with his last bowl ran the jack four three leaving Walker to draw shot for the rink points. This he duly did for the Oxfordshire win.
