Banbury & Oxford teams qualify in ladies fours

Carole Galletly, Pam Shepherd, Helen Young and Caroline Campion (Banbury Central) and Karen Galloway, Carol Gaskins, Donna Knight and Katherine Hawes (Oxford City & County) have qualified for the national fours finals held at Leamington spa in August.

The quarter and semi finals were held at Chipping Norton yesterday. Campion’s route route the the finals was comfortable beating club mates skipped by Sue Waring and Emma Gilkes’ four from Watlington well.

The other half saw Hawes’ four looking dead and buried in the quarter final trailing 9 – 17 with 4 ends to go. The four managed to pick up all 8 shots including a 5 on the 20th end. The game went level going into the last end with Hawes’ four managing to get the shot they needed to win by 1 and the only time they were ahead in the game. Hawes’ team started better in the semi final against Karen Alder’s team from West Witney. Alder put up a strong fight but couldn’t quite make all the shots back seeing Hawes’ team qualify.

Gilkes 13, Campion 27

The quarter finals and semi finals were held at Shiplake BC on Saturday. The top half of the draw saw Campion’s triple beat Cynthia Bryant (Charlbury) very comfortably in the quarter final. The semi final against Katherine Hawes (Oxford City & County) looked to be going the same way but a late comeback for Hawes’ wasn’t enough and Campion’s team made it through to the finals.

The bottom half saw Berry see off Daphne Jacob from the host club without any trouble. Berry raced ahead in the semi final only to see Sandra Wase’s triple (Banbury Borough) pick up an 8 to bring them right back into the game. Berry’s team held their nerve and managed to stay in front and win the game.
