October, 2017:

VP’s win thriller

The Vice Presidents entertained Bucks Vice Presidents at the Oxford City & County club last Sunday in what turned out to be a very thrilling game.

Having been unbeaten in their matches for the last two years, Chairman Ian Hale was looking forward to the Oxfordshire team starting the third consecutive year with a win against their local foes.

The Bucks players took to the City & County green much quicker than the home players and soon moved into a comfortable lead. At fifteen ends it looked as if the VP’s record was coming off the rails, being 22 shots down at 67-89. At eighteen ends it looked as is they were about to hit the buffers as Bucks extended their lead to 26 shots, 105-79.

All of a sudden a light appeared at the end of the tunnel of defeat, when on the nineteenth end across the rinks, Oxfordshire picked up 15 shots to Bucks’ 1 but were still trailing by 12 shots. A strong finish by the Oxfordshire team winning nine of the last ten ends to be played saw them scrape home by three shots 114-111, keeping their winning streak on track.

Highest winning rink went to Chris Weller’s four which included the Chairman’s wife Mavis who stood in at the last minute for one of the Oxfordshire bowlers who was enjoying a weekend under the North Pier in Blackpool.

Rink results:
Allan Hunt, Tony Backer-Holst, Doug Woodward & Melvin Brain lost 22-28
David Varney, Bob Foster, Albert Fulkes & Chris Weller won 30-11
Ian Hale, Bill Pointer, John McGeough & Alan Ley lost 21-24
Gerald Fountain, Frank Woods, Alex Fleming & Ian Whelpton lost 18-27
Mavis Hale, John Stephens, Mick Morris & Alan Rowe 23-21
