Oxon beat Surrey in HCL

Oxfordshire travelled to east Surrey for the third time in a week to play in their second HCL game of the season on Saturday 2nd July. With both counties fielding much changed sides Oxfordshire got off to the better start and had established a small lead after 5 ends. The overall match remained tight throughout but Oxfordshire maintained their lead to win by 15.

Steve Jones with the President and his deputy contested well and came back strongly to only lose by 3. On the next rink it was a similar story, this time Joe Abercrombie and co went down by 4. Rink 3 was a much happy story for Oxfordshire with Kevin Alder’s rink always going well for a comfortable win by 16 shots.

Rink 4 saw the game fluctuate with control of the jack length proving very influential. After a storming start Will Parker with the Youth advantage of Orren Bennett and Bradley Squires stormed into a 14 shot lead after 7 ends, only to lose 11 in the next six ends. Thereafter things were even and Will and Co won by 6. Trevor Prew skipped his rink with authority to keep in touch and went down by 9. Ian Whelpton on rink 6 had a close game on end won but thanks to 3 counts of 4 won by 9 shots. Harvey Alder (West Witney BC) brought his Under 25 form to play his first senior county game and was awarded his Colts badge.
