Oxon men win first Middleton Cup game by 7 shots

Oxfordshire, with 6 new faces in the team, got off to a great start in this year’s Middleton Cup campaign with a win over Buckinghamshire at Oxford City & County. The score was Oxfordshire 124 shots and Buckinghamshire 116 a win by 7 shots which equates to a 16 – 6 points victory.

The rinks of Mark Charlett and Paul Sharman were never behind in the match and both won comfortably. Melvin Brain from Kidlington making his Middleton Cup debut had a storming game on Paul Sharman’s rink much to the delight of the large number of supporters watching.

The final winning rink was that of Ian Snowdon who despite being 10 shots up after 10 ends found themselves level at 20 ends. However they edged to victory by 1 shot after a close measure on the last end for a deserved victory.

The rink of Mark Sykes was 7 shots up at 10 ends but losing a 6 and then a 4 on the 18 th and 19 th ends respectively was too much to overcome and Mark eventually went down by 6 shots.

Ray Gaskin’s match was always tight with only a few shots in it all through the match. Losing 2 of the last 3 ends resulted in an 8 shot defeat for Ray. The same result awaited the rink of Will Parker. Only 3 shots behind after 18 ends dropping a 7 on the 19 th end sealed a 12 shot defeat.

Before the match started Oxfordshire President Peter Latter awarded Trevor Prew his 50 game badge.

Defeat for Under 25s

Oxon Under 25s suffered an early set back in their quest for a first ever JHCL title at Thatcham yesterday.
Despite losing six players at the end of last season the Oxon team was confident of a good showing against Berkshire and at halfway the game was finely balanced however a much better second half for the hosts saw them to a 69-36 and 10 points to 0 victory.

Rink Scores (Oxon first):

Chris Gilkes 12, Kyle Mallandain 17
David Leighfield 8, BJ Byles 26
Shane Cooper 16, David Hancock 26

On the positive side three players made their debuts for the Under 25s in a friendly rink skipped by former player Joe Woodward. Thame’s Matt Canfield, Ollie John of Woodstock and Banbury Central youngster Luke Gilbert all played their first games and did very well. Our thanks to Joe for giving up his lie-in to help out!
Thomas Tisbury and Jonathan Dadson, both 14, of Thame played only their second games in the league and both impressed.
We now look to the White Rose regional finals at Croydon on Sunday 19th June. We play Hampshire at 10.00am while Berkshire face Kent. The winners play off in the afternoon for a place at Leamington.
