League Week 2

Week two and, for some clubs, the season is already looking good whist others need to improve if they are to stay in their current division.

With last year’s champions, Headington, having a bye, this week was time for other contenders to make their mark in Division 1. Whilst no team was able to make a big statement, South Oxford scraped past Shiplake in the closest match of the week. Indeed, while Jim Bland’s rink comprehensively beat Dave Tidball’s the latter, skipping for South Oxford, moved the jack with his, and the games, final wood to score two shots and give his club the valuable two match points.

The other movers were Carterton, whose first match of the season ended in a close victory away at Banbury Central. Gordon Walker’s rink winning on the final end to snatch rink and match points from the home side, despite Will Campion’s rink winning by thirteen shots.

The final match in the division was also close except that Richard Barnett’s rink’s twelve point winning margin proved enough for Witney Mills to claim victory over City and County.

In Division 2 Watlington’s youngster, five under twenty-five players in the team, proved good enough to beat Bicester. The telling score was that of one such under twenty-five, Chris Gilkes, who skipped his rink to a thirteen shot victory.

Charlbury continued where they had started, this time defeating Witney Town 5 – 1 to go level on points with Watlington at the top of the league. No individual rink doing anything spectacular, just sufficient done on three rinks to ensure victory.

West Witney won well away at Adderbury with comfortable victories for Harry Williams and Kevin Alder’s rinks.

Newly promoted Hanborough continue to do well in Division3, this week at City and County’s expense. In a match that could have gone either way, Martin Oliver’s men swung the match points to the away side with a fourteen shot win.

Kidlington’s second 5 – 1 victory keeps them level with Hanborough. This week it was Banbury Central who came and were conquered! In a match with big swings on three rinks, including Mike Peterson’s who came from 5 – 15 down after nine ends to achieve a winning margin against Tom McKenna, and one tied after twenty ends when Central had been trailing by 10 shots after six ends, with Malcolm Brain’s men score two on the last end for a home victory.

Headington B won away at Thame with Mike Kirby’s twenty-six shot margin more than cancelling out Graham Penn’s fifteen shots for the home side.

There were no century score at all this week, the nearest was Bloxham’s 99 shot total at home to Chadlington. The 6 – 0 win puts them at the top of Division 4.

Blackbird Leys first game of the season saw them win on shots scored at Woodstock with James Baldwin’s men starring with a twenty shot victory.

In the final match of the week, Phil Woodville’s eighteen shot win meant that South Oxford took home the match points with a win against West Oxford.
