August 18th, 2015:

Oxford & District Bowls League Cup

Despite the forecast for localised flooding and storms, the League Cup semi-finals at South Oxford managed to avoid the rain, with both greens bowling better than expected.

League champions Headington A and third place Banbury Central A had won 9 of the 11 League Cup finals between them, so both started favourites to progress against their lower League opponents.

Holders Headington A came up against their B side, from Division 3, in the first ever clash between the 2 sides. Needing to get swiftly out of the blocks the B side found themselves trailing from very early on, with Jason King’s rink establishing an early lead for the A team for the second year running. At the half way stage the A side were ahead on all 4 rinks with a lead a 24 shots, before romping to a 31 shot win at the end. Jason King’s rink finished with an emphatic 18 shot win, but the B team did register a consolation, as Mark Kirby’s four managed to draw against a rink containing 3 Middleton Cup bowlers.

In the other semi-final Banbury Central A came up against Thame, another side qualifying for the semis for the first time. At 9 ends there was just 1 shot between the 2 sides, but the lower league side were unable to sustain their encouraging start and 3 of the Central rinks started to pull away. By 18 ends Central were in control with Nigel Galletly, Ian Whelpton and Keith Whelpton
all finishing strongly with 10+ shot margins.

The final of the League Cup takes place on Thursday 3rd September under the floodlights at Kidlington Bowls Club.
