U25’s: JHCL v Sussex

Oxfordshire Under 25s reversed the defeat of two weeks ago in Surrey against Sussex at Kidlington on Sunday with an eighteen shot and 8 points to 2 win. Needing a win to stay in contention for the Junior Home Counties League title Oxon’s youngsters under the captaincy of George Schwab delivered a solid team performance to do just that. Schwab himself lead his rink of Jamie Wilkinson, Harvey Alder and Joe Woodward to an eleven shot victory over Sam Broomfield having been behind it he early stages. Shane Cooper with regular three Dan Wakeman along with Orren Bennett and Ben Dickson hit the green running and at ten ends had opened up a fifteen shot lead. The four continued to score well and ended up with a 32-12 win over Callum Phillimore while Oxford’s third rink skipped by Chris Gilkes struggled against strong opposition in the form of White Rose skip Jack Fairhall playing three to brother Adam. Gilkes, along with Sam Watts, Brandon King and Dan Swanson battled hard however to finish thirteen adrift and give their team mates the chance to secure the overall win.

Two games remain for Oxon and both must be won if the team is to be in with a shout of winning the league for the first time. First up is Buckinghamshire at Iver Heath on 26th July followed by a home fixture versus Kent at Kidlington on 2nd August.

John’s Trophy: Oxon lose by 5 in final group game

Bowls Oxfordshire Ladies played Berkshire on Saturday 4th July at Thatcham BC in their final John’s Trophy group game. The game was close fought with Oxon just losing out by 5 shots in the end. Oxon did a little better in this game winning on 3 rinks skipped by Brenda Havard, Jeanette Berry and Carol Gaskins. Unfortunately Oxon’s John’s Trophy campaign is now over and Berkshire progress to the next stage.

Middleton Cup: Oxon’s final game v Hants

Oxfordshire’s final game of the 2015 Middleton Cup campaign against Hampshire at Oxford City and County BC on Saturday 4th July started promisingly for Oxfordshire with a lead of 15 shots after 10
ends and progressed evenly with the Oxfordshire lead reduced to 12 after 18 ends.

With the two outside rinks finishing first and both going Hampshire’s way to give them a lead of 10 shots. Mark Charlett’s rink reduced the deficit by 4 and Ian Snowdon secured a 1 shot victory. Paul Sharman won by 3 and Ray Gaskin’s four went into the last end leading by 5 and Oxfordshire overall by 2. A 2 for Hampshire brought the shots level and the rinks 4-2 in Oxfordshire’s favour.

A Middleton Cup flash was awarded to Paul Lopez (Oxford City and County BC). A 50 game badge was presented to Banbury Borough’s A J Docherty and a 200 game badge to Barry Lamboune (Shiplake Village BC). Making his Middleton Cup debut was 17 year old Orren Bennett (Chadlington BC).

Oxfordshire 111 shots 13 points Hampshire 111 shots 9 points.
