Under 25/31 news

The new season has started in positive fashion for Oxfordshire’s young players.

Gary May of Headington BC has been selected for an England junior international trial on 26th May. Well done Gary. I am sure that all in the county wish you well.

A double rink trial was played against Hertfordshire Under 25s on Sunday at Kidlington with Oxfordshire emerging as victors by a single shot.

Alongside the ten trialists, a further fifteen Oxon bowlers played in friendly games and good early season promise was shown.

We welcomed two new players to the men’s Under 25s squad. Thomas Tisbury from Thame BC and Bradley Squires of West Witney BC both played some great bowls and are valuable additions to the team, which over the next couple of seasons will lose several senior key players due to age. It is imperative for the continued evolution of our junior teams that new bowlers are encouraged to get involved as early as possible regardless of age and experience and therefore if any club has youngsters playing or interested in playing please get in touch with Gail or myself. As well as the Junior Home Counties League, White Rose and Amy Rose we also play friendlies, have coaching sessions and internal competitions meaning something for everyone. Please see the website for a the full programme.

The Under 25s play in the White Rose double rink against Middlesex at Kidlington on Sunday 25th May and the first JHCL game against Berkshire on 1st June at Thatcham. Both games start at 10.30am. Please come along and support if possible.

Middleton Cup 2014

Middleton Cup squad 2014

For varying reasons the Middleton Cup squad for 2014 shows some changes in personnel from that of last season but I am very confident that the players selected for the county this time round are more than capable of doing well in this competition again. I would like to pay tribute to the service given to the county at this level over the past twenty-seven years by Mike Petersen (Oxford City & County BC) who has announced his retirement from Middleton Cup this season. Thanks Mike!

I and the players will be working hard together to achieve best possible results for Oxfordshire this coming season. We hope to go further than the quarter final appearances of the last two years but fully acknowledge the size of the task facing us. In any event please be assured of our total commitment whatever the outcome. The support of all members of the association is sought at both home and away games. Be in no doubt as to how a few familiar (and hopefully friendly) faces can give a boost to the team during these highly competitive and difficult games. Thanks.

A full fixture list is available on this website and also in your county handbooks. If anyone would like to discuss any matter regarding the Middleton Cup, Home Counties League or Under 25s please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I look forward to seeing you all through the season.

Regards

Steve Gilkes
