Mark Sykes takes the Champion of Champions

Champion of Champions 2013Banbury Borough’s Mark Sykes brought the County competitions to a close adding the Champions of Champions title to the Two Wood singles he won in May which started the started the competition season off.

In Sunday’s entertaining final at Oxford City & County he overcame Watlington’s Gordon Hooker in a game much closer than the scoreline indicated. After losing the first four ends, Sykes picked up two fours in the next three ends to move into a 9-6 lead.

Hooker closed within a shot with a couple of singles but his opponent then took four of the next five ends to open a four shot lead for 14-10 and then showed his class over the next five ends with some excellent bowls when under pressure, to take the title with a 21-10 win.

In the mornings semi-finals, Sykes overcame Bloxham’s Ray Hopkins 21-11, collecting 9 unanswered shots over the last four ends, while his fellow finalist came out on top 21-18 against Carterton’s Bob Turley in a 22 end thriller.

Vice Presidents bring their Golden Anniversary season to a close

The Vice Presidents brought their Golden Anniversary season to a close with two charity games against the Home Counties Bowls Association and Friends of English Bowling. Both games, which were in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, were played on the Kidlington BC green on September 12th & 19th respectively. In the HCBA game, rinks from Berks, Bucks, Kent, Middlesex and Oxfordshire took three of the five rinks to record a 105-86 scoreline, followed a week later by the FoEB team, with players from as far away as Diss in Norfolk, Essex, Sussex and Somerset, sharing the rinks 3-3 and returning home with a 132-96 win.

October 13th see’s the start of the VP’s limited Indoor season, with a match against Buckinghamshire VP’s followed by South Warwickshire BA on the 20th, both matches being played at Oxford City & County IBC.
