League week 6

Week six of the Oxford and District Bowls league, sponsored by Yarnton Nurseries, provided some unexpected results.

In Division 1 Cartertons week off provided Headington’s A with the chance to leapfrog them into top spot. They made no mistake with a comprehensive 6 – 0 victory away at Banbury Chestnuts, a result that also provided the only century of this weeks results. Good wins for Ian Snowdon, by 23 shots, and Howard Watts’ rinks, by 22 shots, providing the foundation for their high score.

City and County’s A side, who could have challenged for top spot, went down to their first defeat of the season to Banbury Central’s A side. As last week, it was John Tee’s rink and the young guns, this week skipped by George Schwab in Will Campions absence, who gave Central their victory.

The final match in the division was a local derby at Witney with West beating Mills on three rinks. Andrew Auger’s rink can feel aggrieved, as they won their match by 21 shots only to see the clubs other three rinks lose. Kevin Alder’s men racking up a 26 shots victory in the process.

Division 2 is topped by South Oxford’s A side but they are the only club to have played six matches and their week out this week may see that position change. Big wins for the rinks of Herbie Payne, George Young and Kevin Mobley and a narrower win for Dick Claridge’s men gave City and County all six points.

Thame ares till 2nd, despite not playing whilst Bicester moved into third place winning comfortable at Charlbury.

Witney Town gained their first victory of the season whilst hosting Shiplake but still find themselves in last place and some way adrift of Kidlington.

Division 3 is topped by Watlington, despite their losing at Blackbird Leys. Good wins for Steve O’Keefe and James Baldwin’s rinks provided the home side with their win. This result left Chipping Norton with the chance to top the league but they also went down, to City and County’s B side, in a match notable for two tied rinks.

The other two matches in the division were close affairs with Bloxham beating Woodstock and Headington B defeating The Oxford Bowls Club.

Division 4 was notable for the surprise defeat of unbeaten newcomers Adderbury at Hanborough. A victory made for the home side by Keith Williams’ rinks 22 shot winning margin.

In the closest match of the night Oxford University Press came out top in their clash at South Oxford whilst Chadlington got the better of Florence Park with Phil Rathbone’s men leading the way with a 12 shot victory.

The final match in the division saw Banbury Central’s B side defeating West Oxford with Bob Wilkins 20 shot margin proving the difference between the teams.
