League Week 4

Week 4 of the Oxford and District Bowls league, sponsored by Yarnton Nurseries, provided some unusual results. In Division 1, Headington’s A team failed to close the gap on Carterton despite beating West Witney by 97 shots to 53 and taking all six available points. This because Carterton also gained six points, without bowling a wood, as Banbury Chestnuts were unable to raise a team to play on the night. In the third fixture in this division, City and County A maintained their excellent form with a ten shot defeat of Witney Mills.

Division 2 is now taking some shape both at the top and bottom. South Oxford A remain top, despite losing 93 – 70 away to Shiplake, whilst Witney Town already look destined to return to Division 3 after another big defeat, this time away to Thame. In the third match, Bicester came out on top in a close game with Kidlington.

Division 3 finally saw Headington B team show their true worth with a 101 – 72 point victory over close rival City and County B. Blackbird Leys lost to a strong Bloxham team as did The Oxford Bowls club, at home to Watlington, a match that was the scene of a fine tussle between Joe Glen of Oxford and Connor Hathaway, Shiplake, two young men demonstrating that the sport cab be enjoyed by those under 40! The final fixture saw Woodstock come out on top of a close game with Chipping Norton. The results mean that the division looks like being very tight, one good result by any side could alter it completely.

In Division 4, the match at Banbury Central was marred by the collapse, and subsequent hospitalisation, of a Florence Park player during the 14th end. With both captains agreement, the other rinks finished after fifteen end leaving Central winners by 28 shots. The other matches in the division saw defeats for all three Oxford teams. Chadlington were comfortable winners at South Oxford against the home team’s B side, Oxford University Press lost at home to Hanborough as did West Oxford, to Adderbury. Even at this early stage of the season, it looks like Chadlington and Adderbury are heading for Division 3 in 2014.
