Oxon ladies finish strong to claim first league win

Bowls Oxfordshire ladies claimed a 10 shot victory over Warwickshire in the Middle England League at Welford on Avon today.

Rinks skipped by Caroline Campion and Carol Penson took an early strong lead at 10 ends to keep the game tight early on. 15 ends saw the rink of Carole Galletly, Hazel Woodward, Stella Amos and Katherine Hawes’ deficit increase to 12 shots but in a late surge they picked up 15 shots over the next 6 ends to claim a 3 shot win, and Jeanette Berry’s team managed to break away from their close fought game to claim an 11 shot win. Caroline Campion’s rink finished with a 10 shot win but the highest winning rink by 12 shots went to Carol Penson’s rink of Margaret Morris, Carol Morgan and Pat Taylor leading Oxon to victory.

Early season victory for U25’s

The Oxfordshire Under 25s started their 2013 campaign with a good double rink trial win against Herts at Bushey on Sunday. George Schwab’s rink of himself, Shane Cooper, Chris Gilkes and Sam Watts was unchanged from the 2012 competition and played some excellent bowls in their 29-10 victory over Scott Lepley’s four. Oxon’s second rink was skipped by Dean May, with Dan and Darren Wakeman. Ryan Full and Lee Wilkinson played half a game each. Always behind, the four(five) struggled to pick up shots despite some great play but did enough in winning five out of the last eight ends to ensure the overall victory. They finished 19-28. Due to an admin error Herts were short of players and so Chadlington’s Orren Bennett guested for them and was excellent throughout.

Due to the lack of numbers our younger bowlers played out a game against each other. Under the guidance of Will Campion fantastic progress was made by our future stars. Bicester’s Lucas King had his first outing with the under 25s and was in opposition to brother, Brandon, who played some great stuff at lead. Other players Jamie Wilkinson, Ben Dickson, Connor Hathaway and Dan Swanson will all be pushing for league places if they continue in the same positive manner as they did here.

The U31 ladies also made their first appearance of the season. The rink of Helen Young, Emma Gilkes, Emma Dickson and Claire Soden ran out comfortable 29-4 winners over their Herts opponents.

The Under 25s get together at Kidlington on 5th May is cancelled due to the clash with the 2 wood singles. Most of our junior players are competing.

The next game is the always hard fought and highly competitive Junior Home Counties League game against Berks at Kidlington on 12th May. All support greatly appreciated.

If any club has any junior players regardless of experience, age or ability who have not yet played for the Under 25s please contact team manager Steve Gilkes on 07868 435052 so that they can be introduced to the junior game at County level and to the county’s other young players.

Vice Presidents Bowling Association

2013 see’s the Oxfordshire Vice Presidents Bowling Association celebrating its Golden Anniversary.

The County Association authorised the forming of the Vice Presidents in 1963 and as required by the County Constitution it has always been run as a self-financing organisation without any support from the County Association. In fact a per capita contribution is made to the County each year.

In line with all other area’s of the game, the Associations membership has fallen since the heady days of the 80’s and 90’s and currently stands around the 50 mark, and it a credit to its stalwart of current day members that the Association has reached such a memorable anniversary. In fact over the last couple of years fixtures have been lost against other County Vice President Associations with larger memberships, which have folded due to apathy of their members.

Our match programme, which can be viewed on our fixture page, involves both outdoor and indoor fixtures. As part of our celebratory season, we have arranged special games against the Home Counties Bowls Association and Friends of English Bowling.

Membership is open to any bowler who is an affiliated member of an outdoor club affiliated to the Oxfordshire Bowling Association, or an affiliated member of any of the Oxfordshire indoor bowling clubs. Our member’s range from County Champions, through Middleton Cup bowlers to everyday club bowlers, all are welcome. Anyone wishing to join simply needs to complete the application form below and forward it with payment to the Association Secretary. Members send in request slips from the Association handbook for team selections. Should you require further information, please contact the Association Secretary.

Welcome to the Outdoor Season

Welcome to the 2013 Outdoor season! Many greens opened yesterday for the first time this year and with that in mind, the website has been updated ready. The website will be ran in much the same way as last year with the county competition secretaries posting results online as they receive them and I will post team sheets, reports, results and news when they are passed to me.
