Under 25/31 news

The new season has started in positive fashion for Oxfordshire’s young players.

Gary May of Headington BC has been selected for an England junior international trial on 26th May. Well done Gary. I am sure that all in the county wish you well.

A double rink trial was played against Hertfordshire Under 25s on Sunday at Kidlington with Oxfordshire emerging as victors by a single shot.

Alongside the ten trialists, a further fifteen Oxon bowlers played in friendly games and good early season promise was shown.

We welcomed two new players to the men’s Under 25s squad. Thomas Tisbury from Thame BC and Bradley Squires of West Witney BC both played some great bowls and are valuable additions to the team, which over the next couple of seasons will lose several senior key players due to age. It is imperative for the continued evolution of our junior teams that new bowlers are encouraged to get involved as early as possible regardless of age and experience and therefore if any club has youngsters playing or interested in playing please get in touch with Gail or myself. As well as the Junior Home Counties League, White Rose and Amy Rose we also play friendlies, have coaching sessions and internal competitions meaning something for everyone. Please see the website for a the full programme.

The Under 25s play in the White Rose double rink against Middlesex at Kidlington on Sunday 25th May and the first JHCL game against Berkshire on 1st June at Thatcham. Both games start at 10.30am. Please come along and support if possible.

Bowls Oxfordshire Juniors 19th May

Both of Oxon’s junior teams were in action at the weekend in preparation for their forthcoming double rink competitions.

The men’s Under 25 team was due to play Wiltshire in a four rink game incorporating a double rink trial however the opposition were unable to fulfil the fixture so the White Rose triallists played a game against a senior team captained by Headington’s Howard Watts. The manager’s and team’s thanks go to all the seniors that gave up their Sunday morning to make the game a meaningful workout for the youngsters ahead of the White Rose clash with Berkshire next weekend.

Rink 1:

Under 25s: Sam Watts, Ryan Full, Shane Cooper, George Schwab 17,

Over 25s: Mike Petersen, Chris Weller, Shaun Claridge, Mark Charlett 20

Rink 2:

Under 25s: Dean May, Darren Wakeman/Will Soden, Dan Wakeman, Gary May 12

Over 25s: Mark East, Remy Clanfield, Nathan Lewis, Howard Watts 14

The remaining eight juniors played each other in a friendly which proved to be equally competitive as the trial game with a high level of play being achieved by all.

Brandon King, Ben Dickson, Connor Hathaway, Orren Bennett 12

Dan Swanson, Lucas King, Joe Glenn, Willl Soden/Darren Wakeman 20

Our ladies’ Under 31 team struggled for numbers however by ‘borrowing’ two girls they were able to play an Amy Rose practice match against their Wilts opposition and ran out winners by four shots. Banbury Central’s Helen Young skipped one rink with City & County pair Amy Stone and eight year old Emma Dickson at three and two respectively and won by six (28-22) while Oxon’s other rink, skipped by Watlington’s Emma Gilkes with club mate Claire Soden at lead and Katie Glenn, C&C, at three, narrowly lost by two (18-20). The final score was Oxon 46, Wilts 42.

All junior players in Oxfordshire are encouraged to take part in matches and practice sessions regardless of experience or perceived skill levels. The majority of the players above started at a young age (two are still under 10) and became part of the County squads with little or no playing experience. Coaching, equipment and time will be given to all requiring it and training/practice days are being arranged.

All clubs with junior players or youngsters interested in taking up the sport should contact managers Steve and Gail Gilkes on 07868 435052 and 07846 672013 respectively.

Early season victory for U25’s

The Oxfordshire Under 25s started their 2013 campaign with a good double rink trial win against Herts at Bushey on Sunday. George Schwab’s rink of himself, Shane Cooper, Chris Gilkes and Sam Watts was unchanged from the 2012 competition and played some excellent bowls in their 29-10 victory over Scott Lepley’s four. Oxon’s second rink was skipped by Dean May, with Dan and Darren Wakeman. Ryan Full and Lee Wilkinson played half a game each. Always behind, the four(five) struggled to pick up shots despite some great play but did enough in winning five out of the last eight ends to ensure the overall victory. They finished 19-28. Due to an admin error Herts were short of players and so Chadlington’s Orren Bennett guested for them and was excellent throughout.

Due to the lack of numbers our younger bowlers played out a game against each other. Under the guidance of Will Campion fantastic progress was made by our future stars. Bicester’s Lucas King had his first outing with the under 25s and was in opposition to brother, Brandon, who played some great stuff at lead. Other players Jamie Wilkinson, Ben Dickson, Connor Hathaway and Dan Swanson will all be pushing for league places if they continue in the same positive manner as they did here.

The U31 ladies also made their first appearance of the season. The rink of Helen Young, Emma Gilkes, Emma Dickson and Claire Soden ran out comfortable 29-4 winners over their Herts opponents.

The Under 25s get together at Kidlington on 5th May is cancelled due to the clash with the 2 wood singles. Most of our junior players are competing.

The next game is the always hard fought and highly competitive Junior Home Counties League game against Berks at Kidlington on 12th May. All support greatly appreciated.

If any club has any junior players regardless of experience, age or ability who have not yet played for the Under 25s please contact team manager Steve Gilkes on 07868 435052 so that they can be introduced to the junior game at County level and to the county’s other young players.
